Capitalism Itself
is not responsible for our monolithic American culture. It’s too easy to place the blame on such an abstraction. It’s the tasteless, non-thinking American consumer – he or she who seems to prefer (for example) processed food in a cardboard box, music as a product, and the endless array of disposable objects that claim to make our lives easier.
In short, the consumer doesn’t want to think. He delegates the tasks of daily life to a corporate entity. She moves too quickly from: how can I solve this problem? to: what can I purchase?
Jack was right about “all work and no play.” Few people have energy to think clearly when they spend 8 or 10 hours a day working. But this is a choice.
Work less. Buy less. Think more. Play more.
